~Living on a Farm – Chrissie's Tale~

Chrissie sat up in her bed and saw a Blue Jay at her window. The cute fellow was young, yet full grown. His feathers were fluffy and bright; and his song was so pretty. When she crawled out of bed, she pulled her brown hair up in a pony tail and headed out to do her morning chores. Chrissie lives on a farm in Georgia and in the morning she is supposed to go check on things around the farm.

Today was a wonderful day. The wind was nice and blowing smoothly. A perfect addition to the warm Georgia sun.

Everything was reasonably calm this early morning. When she walked into the stable, everything seemed to be in place. The horses, their heads over their stalls, were whining for their breakfast. Chrissie could never get over how beautiful and graceful those massive creatures were, especially when they run through their pastures: their tails and manes gliding swiftly through the wind and their strong, thin legs carrying them so fast.

After making sure all the horses were all in order, she went over to check on the sheep. All of them were crowed together in a corner of their stall. The lambs were so cute, just becoming big puff balls. They were still a little wobbly, but they were starting to walk and run around more now that the summer was beginning to warm up. One of them came prancing over to her and sniffed her hand. Chrissie gave a smile as it came up and took the carrot she held out to it. Its mouth tickled her hand so sweetly and when she tried to pet its head, it shied off to its herd again.

Moving along, she went over to check on the chickens. All of them were perched on their nests, keeping their eggs warm. All of them looked cozy and they were sleeping still. Their feathers covering the floor of the coop made it difficult to walk around and make sure you don't step in anything you don't want on your shoes.

The only other animals she had to check on now were the donkeys. The donkeys stay in a separate stable from the horses because they are used for different things. The horses were used for riding and herding; and the donkeys were used to pull or transport things from the family farm to other farms around the area.

When she reached the donkeys, she gave them some fresh hay and a couple carrots. She loved how they had a mohawk type mane, and short and stout body build.

Now that she had checked on all their animals, she always liked to take a walk around the farm and just enjoy the nature and wildlife.

As she looked around, she saw all the old and new farm equipment in a line. The old ones were rusting out, and weren't much use any more; but her dad still liked having them. Then next to the oldies, looking totally out of place, were the new and useful farm equipment. Most of them were green, but a few blue and yellow ones were mixed in. Most of the old tractors were red. Walking farther along, she looked at their stable and how it needed to be painted. Its red paint was flaking off, making the barn look old; and the doors also needed a fresh coat of paint.

The path she was walking on was covered in different animal tracks: some from their own animals and some from the straggling animals that pass by through the night. She looked up into one of the tall oak trees and saw all the nests with young babies hatching. The buds were in bloom on the trees and the bushes; the flowers were sprouting up all over the place, making the farm look happy and thriving.

Chrissie realized that the farm, though busy, was a peaceful and relaxing place to live. She really was enjoying her tranquil lifestyle.
