~Backyard Scenery~
The air warm, the wind blowing, the sun shining bright; this is the best way to describe the backyard of the Lawson’s. The two oldest of the family, Carson and Sophia were observing their backyard for a school project.
“There are some robins nesting in the branches of the tall oaks,” Sophia said to her twin sister.
“And some squirrels feeding on the grass seed,” Carson said in reply.
The girls were both 14 years old and in the 9th grade. They were homeschooled, but still had an assignment due at the end of the week. For their science their mother had assigned them to write a paper on what goes on in the backyard. They could either observe together or by themselves. However, they could not write the paper together, they had to write a separate one each. Right now they were on the back deck in their lawn chairs, watching all the critters –large and small- scurry around the yard and go on their way.
Sophia was writing down notes like crazy; while Carson was just taking everything in, writing stuff down every now-and-then. Sophia was the girlier of the two, her blonde hair in a bob cut. Her hair so short it came up to her ears. She was wearing a pair of dress slacks and a nice top. Carson never understood why her sister wore pants in the summer, even if it was the tail end of it. Sophia, on the other hand, never understood her sister’s style either. Today Carson was wearing fabric shorts and a fitted tank-top. The slight wind was blowing her long, wavy hair. She had it pulled back in a loose pony tail, some strands lying loose and framing her face. Carson was also wearing a ball-cap; something Sophia NEVER wore. She was afraid of getting hat hair.
Although the two sisters had different styles and enjoyed different things, they still were sisters and they got along and hung out a lot. Today was a great example of their being together. They both loved being outside and enjoying nature.
The sights in the Lawson’s backyard were active and enjoyable. The birds were flying to and from their nests, getting ready for the cool winter. The squirrels were storing their nuts in tree hollows or burrows in the ground, just to forget where they stored them. The rabbits were coming out of their burrows and gnawing on the grass seed the girls’ father had planted at the beginning of summer. The trees were blowing in the breeze, their leaves –different shades of greens- at the end of their life time, getting ready to turn vibrant colors and die off.
There were chickadees and nuthatches dining together on the birdfeeders outside the kitchen window; and there were cardinals and finches feeding on the feeders by the back tree-line, until a blue-jay came over and frightened them away. Grasshoppers and crickets were hopping through the forest of grass, and ladybugs and bees were flying around.
A ladybug came over and visited with Carson and Sophia, so the girls took the time to look at her more closely. They enjoyed looking at how her delicate wings were protected, and how her tiny legs were attached to her body. She flew away, and the girls watched her as she went off.
After watching and observing for about an hour, the girls decided they had enough materials and could start on their papers. They went to their rooms and started working on their papers. Both Carson and Sophia had a great morning, breathing in the fresh air and working with their sister. They were both in a good mood and when they finally turned their papers in at the end of the week, they each got an A. The girls told their mom they would be happy to do another paper so long and they could work together.
